US Open Win Cements Djokovic Record of Most Grand Slam Wins and Prize Money

The most important tennis tournament of the year in the United States celebrated its 50th anniversary of equal prize money for men and women

Bloomberg Línea — After an intense encounter at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Novak Djokovic was crowned as the 2023 US Open champion, the last Grand Slam of the year. He defeated the Russian Daniil Medvedev by 6-3, 7-6, and 6-3, and the Serbian tennis legend now boasts a record 24 Grand Slam titles during his career (ten Australian Opens, seven Wimbledons, four US Opens, and three Roland Garros).

The organizers of the US Open announced an 8% increase in total prize money this year compared to 2022, while also celebrating 50 years of equal prize money for both men and women. The world number-one, who also won the Australian and French majors this year, has now accumulated more than US$170 million in prize money since making his debut back in 2003, according to data compiled by Statista.

As per the same Statista report, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal had won US$130.59 million and US$134.64 million up to February this year, respectively.

For his triumph at this year’s US Open, Djokovic will receive a total of $3 million. in addition to the prizes he earned by advancing from the first round.

The 2023 US Open also saw a significant increase in meal allowances for all players across all competitors: $1,000 travel vouchers have been introduced. Players receives an additional hotel room or had their hotel allowance doubled from $300 to $600 per day if the player chose to stay elsewhere, the organization also announced.

Heatwave

This year’s edition was marked by a severe heatwave that affected players throughout the two weeks of the tournament. The National Weather Service issued a heat and humidity advisory for the New York City area through Friday night, as reported by Bloomberg.

US Open Audience

Last year’s US Open had an average of 1.21 million viewers during the two weeks and nearly 168 hours of live coverage, a 50% increase from the previous year, and the third-best for ESPN since it gained exclusive rights to the tournament in 2015, as reported by the media.
