Netflix Adds 300,000 Subscribers in Latin America in Third Quarter

Bloomberg Línea — Netflix (NFLX) added subscribers for the first time this year. In Latin America, the platform’s revenue increased 19% FX neutral year-over-year as it added 300,000 new paid subscribers in the third quarter, compared to the second quarter.

Latin America had 39 million paid memberships by the end of the quarter ended September 30 with a $1 billion revenue, surpassing the Asia and Pacific region, but still below Europe, Middle East and Africa and the US and Canada.

In the first half of the year, growth in Latin America was 14% compared to the first six months of 2021, outperforming other regions.

Netflix also reported that it succeeded with its non-English programming in the third quarter, including Sintonia, which has been a big hit for Netflix in Brazil, with season three generating 38 million hours viewed.

In a call disclosing the earnings on Tuesday night, Netflix’s co-CEO Reed Hastings said he believes a lot of streaming providers will start to focus on bringing sports programming to broadcast on demand. Plus, he sees Smart TVs getting cheaper and being in every home in the world, “which is very positive,” he said.

“There will be a lot of battling for the best content and the best suggestions, the next phase of streaming will be of competitive excellence,” he said. Netflix recently announced it will launch its ad-supported streaming service in 12 markets in November, including Brazil and Mexico.
