Mexico City — Carmakers in Mexico saw their production fall in April compared with the previous month, although output was higher than in April 2022, while new car sales are also up from last year but still below pre-pandemic levels.
During April, 294,550 vehicles were produced in Mexico, 15% fewer than in March 2023, but which was a 17% increase compared with the same month of 2022, according to the country’s statistics bureau INEGI.
Exports, mainly destined for the United States, grew 5% with respect to the same month of the previous year.
Automotive producers shipped 253,335 light vehicles to foreign markets in April, with total exports also lower than those of March.
New car sales in Mexico totaled 97,610 units in April, a 17% increase from a year earlier.
However, vehicle sales in Mexico did not sustain the milestone reached in March, when sales surpassed the levels recorded in March 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, with 98,366 automobiles sold in April 2019.
