Quito — Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso has said he does not rule out running for reelection in 2025, the year in which his term ends. When consulted on the subject during his visit to the United States, he recalled that the national Constitution allows reelection “only once”.
“That will be in 2025, and, at least in Washington, one is emboldened a little, and I can tell you that I will not shirk that responsibility to continue the mandate to continue in economic matters with the virtuous policies that Ecuador requires,” he said.

During the interview, Lasso said that during his administration the economy has “recovered”, and recalled that, on December 14, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) disbursed a credit of $700 million to the South American country “as a result of the sixth review of a program that lasted 27 months”.
This “is the second time in 20 years that we are able to close an agreement with the IMF,” Lasso said, adding that this has a particular value because “it started with a government [of former president Lenín Moreno] and has continued with another government”.
He also pointed out that Ecuador “has the second lowest inflation in the Americas, and not only in the region, but in the three Americas [North America, Latin America and South America], and we project the lowest inflation in the region during 2023″.
