JBS generates 2.1% of Brazil’s GDP — JBS, one of the world’s largest food companies, plays a crucial role in the Brazilian economy. According to an unprecedented study carried out by the Brazilian Economic Research Institute Foundation (Fipe), via the Center for Regional and Urban Economics at the University of São Paulo, the company is responsible for generating 2.1% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 2.7% of the country’s jobs. The study analyzed the socio-economic relevance of the production chains associated with JBS, outlining a comprehensive panorama of the company’s impact on the national scenario.
With production units in more than 130 municipalities, the company plays a fundamental role in generating wealth throughout the country, with the positive effects spreading to neighboring towns. Coordinated by researchers Eduardo Amaral Haddad and Carlos Roberto Azzoni, the survey identified that the presence of JBS in a municipality induces productivity gains, stimulating economic growth in the regions where it operates.
The evaluation method adopted by the survey involved an analysis of public and private information, allowing the size of the production chains associated with JBS to be determined. To do this, input-output modeling techniques were used, which highlight the interconnection between different economic sectors. Various factors such as production, capital, household consumption, exports, inputs, labor and land were considered in the calculation. In all, 67 sectors and 127 products were thoroughly analyzed.
Gilberto Tomazoni, Global CEO of JBS, emphasized the importance of the study for the company, which celebrated its 70th anniversary. He highlighted how the food industry, represented by JBS, makes a substantial contribution to the country, generating direct and indirect jobs and stimulating a wide network of suppliers and customers.
In addition to its 145,000 employees directly linked to its units, distribution centers and offices, the company’s impact extends to a vast network of jobs. Data shows that the production chains related to JBS employ 2.9 million people. An example of this impact can be seen in the city of Barra do Garças, state of Mato Grosso, where for every 100 jobs generated by JBS, there are another 597 jobs in input suppliers, 227 jobs in the state and 370 jobs in other regions of Brazil.
Through its diversified platform covering poultry, pork, beef, sheep and plant-based alternatives, JBS not only stands out as one of the largest food companies globally, but also reaffirms its commitment to quality, food safety and sustainability.
