Upon taking office on January 27, 2022, Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento not only became the first woman president of Honduras, and the fourth in Central America, but also broke more than a century of bipartisanship and put the left wing in power with her Libertad y Refundación party. She served as first lady from 2006 to June 28, 2009, when a coup d’état against her husband José Manuel Zelaya Rosales took place. The president proposes a government of democratic socialism to reduce poverty, which affects 70% of households in the country, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
